Embarrassing Family Moments at Your Wedding- 3 Strategies for Coping

Every bride has that embarrassing family member that she wishes just wouldn’t show up to her wedding.  Maybe you have an uncle that likes to hit on married women or a grandma that loves to wear pink lipstick and show off your baby pictures.  If the thought of embarrassment at your wedding is making you cringe as you send out your wedding invitations, these ideas will help you handle the situation.

Remember, you are only responsible for your own actions.  I know it’s embarrassing when Uncle Clyde hides the ring bearer pillow just ten minutes before the wedding ceremony, but really it doesn’t matter.  If you behave appropriately, the actions of your embarrassing relatives won’t really matter.  Make a goal to handle any situation calmly.  When something embarrassing happens, you may just need to step away and let someone else handle it.  Don’t let someone else ruin your wedding day.

A great way to handle these situations is to put everything into perspective.  In five years, you won’t care what Grandma decided to tell your husband about you as a child.  Someday, you really will think all this craziness is comical.  For now, just enjoy your beautiful wedding favors and your heart wedding theme.  Since you can’t control the actions of others, find a way to put them into perspective so that you can enjoy your wedding.

There are some steps that you can take to limit the embarrassment of family members at your wedding.  If you know that your Aunt Mavis will give a 30 minute toast, don’t put her name on the wedding program.  Give your DJ a list of people that will be offering wedding toasts and tell him not to open the floor to anyone else.  This way, when the wedding toasting flutes come out, you won’t have to worry.  Foresee potential problems and take care of them long before the wedding ceremony.

Your wedding and reception will be a wonderful way to celebrate your love and the start of your new life.  Remember to enjoy your day no matter what.  Every family has a few relatives that make things interesting; don’t think you are the only one.  Plan ahead and don’t worry about things that you can’t change.
