By couple

It is traditional for couples to announce their engagement:

• First, in person, to family and close friends who live nearby,
• Next, with a personal note, to family and friends who live farther away,
• Then, with an announcement in the newspaper.

In the past, the announcement was always made by the bride's parents, but today, many couples do not live with their parents and marry when they are older.

It is now acceptable for couples to issue their own engagement announcement.
