Telling Family and Friends
It is so exciting that you are engaged to be married. You're in love--your step is lighter, colors are brighter, and your heart is singing. That sentiment may sound corny, but there is a certain amount of truth in it. Basically, it means that you can't wait to tell everyone!
Here are some ideas about how to tell them:
- Traditionally, the groom asks the bride's father for her hand in marriage. Most couples no longer feel they need permission to marry, but speaking to the bride's father and/or mother is respectful and courteous.
- The first ones to hear the news of your engagement should be any children either of you may have, the parents of the bride and groom, grandparents, and siblings. If at all possible, share the news with them in person.
- It is nice to tell friends and co-workers in person or with a personal note, but e-mail is acceptable now. Include those who might feel hurt if they just read about your engagement in the paper.
- A newspaper announcement can appear any time from a few days to a year before the wedding. However, a public announcement should not be made if there has been a recent death in either family or a member of the family is extremely ill. The announcement should also be delayed if either the bride or groom is going through a divorce that is not yet final.
- Most newspapers have a form to fill out, although some papers will let you write your own copy. The announcement is usually made by the bride's family, but can also be made by the couple or the groom's parents.
